Fuji 2007 : Free practices 3

N.DRIVERTEAMTIMESGAP

03   TRULLI TOYOTA 1'36"150+ 0'03"404

10:50:27 Welcome to F1-Live.com and live coverage of the second day of running at Fuji Speedway. The third and final practice session ahead of qualifying begins in a few minutes.
10:52:50 The Friday action saw Kimi Raikkonen fastest in the morning session and then somewhat off the pace in the afternoon. Lewis Hamilton set the afternoon pace with a best lap of 1:18.734s, just over two-tenths clear of McLaren team-mate Fernando Alonso.
10:54:14 Given Ferrari dropping off the pace, it is difficult to read too much into the times, but as Kimi Raikkonen explained, it seems pretty close overall. Hopefully in this 60-minute session we will get a better indication of who iss fast and who is not.
10:56:27 Felipe Massa finished the afternoon session third fastest in his Ferrari ahead of the Toyota of Jarno Trulli and Raikkonen. It is a big weekend for the Toyota team and they will be looking to put on a show in front of their home crowd.
10:58:11 Renault showed reasonably well with Heikki Kovalainen and Giancarlo Fisichella setting the sixth and seventh fastest times respectively. BMW Sauber were chasing the setup yesterday however, and will be challenging the Renault team again today.
10:59:40 We have a wet track and there is set to be a short delay we think due to the emergency helicopters being unable to fly.
11:00:46 It is not rain that stops the helicopter taking off, but low cloud and the visibility.
11:01:43 So we are expecting a delay until 11.15am local time, 14 minutes from now.
11:03:43 Yesterday in practice, the track temperature started off at 39 degrees and peaked at the start of the afternoon session at 49. Today with the rain it is a mere 20 degrees. Rain aside, that also make a huge difference.
11:07:03 Presumably the organisers expect the rain to halt and the cloud to lift in the next few minutes, so we shall have to wait and see if the session will start as rescheduled at 11.15.
11:14:08 There is another 15 minute delay.
11:14:57 The session is now rescheduled to start at 11.30 local time, 04.30 CET. It is still the low cloud that is not allowing the helicopter to take off if needed.
11:17:18 The rain continues to fall at Fuji Speedway. It remains to be seen if we will get any practice this morning in Japan or not...
11:27:23 There is still a lot of low cloud but no official news on if the practice session will start as they said in three minutes time.
11:29:42 The cars are firing up and heading down the pit lane.
11:30:09 The third practice session is now underway.
11:30:43 This is starnge as the cloud is worse than it was earlier, but I am sure they have their reasons. It is now a 30-minute session.
11:31:00 A number of cars are heading out for a slow exploritory lap.
11:31:44 They will all complete a slow lap anyway as they now have race engines fitted.
11:32:13 Most are now on an out lap to see what the track conditions are like.
11:33:09 Alex Wurz stays out for a second lap as does Jarno Trulli, Ralf Schumacher and Nico Rosberg.
11:33:31 Massa and Raikkonen remain in the Ferrari pit.
11:34:10 Alex Wurz sets a 1:32.8s lap, 14 seconds off the Friday pace due to the wet circuit.
11:34:23 Massa has gone out
11:34:39 The red flags are now out.
11:35:19 No one seems to have gone off. It is the visibility issue.
11:35:41 They are all returning to the pits. Only Raikkonen did not attempt a lap.
11:36:34 Given the conditions, it is a surprise they started the session at all.
11:37:15 So the session is halted again and the cloud is moving in.
11:37:38 For what is is worth, Wurz is fastest from Rosberg and Trulli.
11:38:28 So this may be the shortest session in history at about three and a half minutes.
11:39:13 There is another official delay now until 11.45 local time, 04.45 CET, six minutes from now.
11:46:19 It seems there will be no action until at least another few minutes, 11.50 local, 04.50 CET.
11:50:15 It is still raining and there are no tell-tale signs of engines firing up as yet.
11:51:12 We have another official delay until 11.53 local time, another two minutes.
11:54:01 Okay, sorry, but that is it. The session has been abandoned.
11:54:25 It now remains to be seen if there will be an improvement in the next two hours before qualifying.
